Bodie: A Ghost Town

Less than ten percent of the original buildings of this mining boom town remain in the high desert north of Mono Lake. Fires and time have taken their toll. In March of the dry winter of 2007 there were only scattered patches of snow on the ground.

  • Driving into Bodie, parking in the lot and walking among the buildings, we can lose track of the larger scene of Bodie. The 'diggings' are far more extensive than we can see from among the buildings. The small flat the town's remains are located in is surrounded by mountain ranges and valleys. At sunset, in this view from north on the Masonic road, Boundary Peak, Mongomery Peak and Queen Mountain in the northern end of the White Mountains form the skyline.
